In Memoriam: Raymond “Ray” Benemerito

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Raymond “Ray” Benemerito.

Ray was one of the most decorated drug-tested powerlifters America has produced. His career began on New Jersey high school platforms and spanned more than two decades in the tested ranks, where he also helped develop the drug testing policies that shaped our sport. He won 15 National Championships, the 1987 IPF World Junior title, and seven WDFPF World Championships, and in 1995 he totaled a record 865 kg in the 82.5 kg class. He went on to place fourth at the 2000 IPF World Championships and to represent the United States at the 2005 World Games.

The Powerlifting America Executive Committee extends its deepest condolences to Ray’s family, his friends, and all who shared a platform with him. May he rest in peace.
